Alternative Treatments for ADHD
Interactive Metronome training is an alternative treatment for ADHD. The patient will listen to rhythmic beats and try to mimic the rhythm by tapping their hand or foot. Then the patient is told how successful they were. According to www.interactivemetronome.com, "over a certain period of time the patient will be able to focus for long periods at a time".
I believe that this alternative treatment over a long period of time is pretty successful. The patient has to be very dedicated and motivated to do that exercise everyday and try to focus. Since young children already have a short attention span, I think a child with ADHD at such a young age needs to be on medication as well. Its possible that there is a certain maturity level that the treatment is most effective. If anything I believe this is a good strategy for a person with ADHD to practice calming down and attempt concentration of one thing.
"The rational for using the interactive metronome as an adjunctive treatment for ADHD is evidence that motor planning and sequencing, rhythmicity, and timing are all relevant to attention problems" (www.adhdlibrary.org).
