My first reaction to this article was filled with anger. I felt the frustration Jamey had about bullying not getting any better. "Bullying statistics show that about 77 percent of students have admitted to being the victim of one type of bullying or another" according to /article-response.html. An increasing number of those students that have been bullied commit suicide. These victims feel that the only way out is to take away their lives, to end the pain. There is just a breaking point when people cannot handle the pain, anger, and sadness anymore, they lose sight of what is good in their life, their strength is weak and tired, and they begin to see one way out. Unfortunately, Jamey Rodemeyer had a breaking point where it was just too much for him to handle anymore...he took his own life.
The article shares Jamey's final face-book statuses and when I read them I can only wonder if anyone ever noticed the calls for help hidden behind the words. I really wish that someone had...Jamey seemed like he was a good leader, he encouraged others to love themselves and fight to bring and end to bullying through his youtube videos. He seemed like he was a strong kid and a lot of people around him did saw that, but that wasn't enough. Jamey's face-book status "...what do I have to do for people to listen to me?", I believe, suggest that his final statement was his suicide. I believe Jamey felt that the only way for people to listen to him and realize the pain he is going through was to take his own life away. Jamey shouldn't have taken his life, no one should, but he did succeed in making a bolder statement and raising the awareness about bullying. He touched so many lives, even Lady Gaga's.
After Lady Gaga found out Jamey was a big fan of her she began to speak out against bullying. I think this was the best thing that could have happened out of this situation. Lady Gaga is the new Madonna, she is very popular especially by teenagers. She is a role model and to see a celebrity speak out and confidently well help awareness. Celebrities are so influential and I believe that for the younger generations this is the best tool. Celebrities are not the only models, teachers and parents are the other significant role models in a young child's life. Teachers and parents need to model love and respect.
